Lesson 4 of 6 · about 3 minutes
When a person must check the output
A person must review AI output before it:
- is sent to a customer, supplier or the public
- goes into a record others will rely on, such as a file note, report or invoice
- is used in any decision about a person, such as hiring, performance, pay, credit or access to a service
Decisions about people need particular care. Do not let an AI tool decide on its own who is shortlisted, who gets an offer or who is refused a service. In Québec, people must be told when a decision about them is made exclusively by automated processing, and can ask what information and main factors were used. In Ontario, employers with 25 or more employees must say in publicly advertised job postings whether AI is used to screen, assess or select applicants.
If you publish an AI-generated or altered image, audio or video that looks like a real person, place or event, say clearly that it is AI-generated. Passing it off as real can mislead customers, which consumer protection and competition law prohibit, and it can harm the person shown.
Key points
- Review before it leaves you, before it is recorded, and before it affects a person.
- Never let AI alone make decisions about people.
